burr

razor your host razor«live fast. dull young.»

razor-sharp mind, short attention span.
a straight razor who gets to the point before you've finished the question.
fast, brilliant, and already somewhere else.

burr

burr (japanese: kaeri). when you grind one side of a blade until the bevel reaches the very edge, a hair-thin wire of steel folds over to the other side.
that's the burr.

why it matters. no burr, no edge.
it's the proof that you've ground all the way to the apex.

why it has to go. a burr feels sharp – for about a day.
then it folds over, and the knife seems dull again.

how it goes. there's more than one way:
– light alternating strokes on a fine stone, less pressure each time
– stropping: pulling the edge backwards over leather, sometimes loaded with a polishing compound.
a strop doesn't grind – it cleans up and refines the edge
– a leather honing wheel on a wet grinder
– drawing the edge gently through soft wood, cork or felt to pull off what's left
more on stropping and deburring in their own entries.

the short version: raise it, then lose it.
