belt, stone or tormek?

stonie your host stonie«keeping them sharp.»

a natural stone and a natural stoner.
calm, wise, never in a hurry.
she's sharpie's one true love.
nobody makes him sharper.

belt, stone or tormek?

there's more than one way to get an edge back.
what matters: the right tool for the job – and no heat on the edge.

belt grinder. fast and powerful.
takes off a lot of material in seconds – perfect for thinning and repairing chips.
the catch: too much pressure or speed and the edge gets hot.
overheated steel loses its hardness.
so: slow, light, and cool.

whetstone. by hand, with water.
total control and the finest finish there is.
but it takes time, and a steady angle takes years of practice.

grit. every stone has a number – its grit.
low numbers are coarse and remove a lot (around 200–400: repairs).
the middle shapes the edge (around 1000: everyday sharpening).
high numbers polish (3000 and up: the finish).
more on grits in its own entry.

tormek. a large water-cooled stone that turns slowly.
the edge never gets hot, and a guide holds the angle exactly – every time, on every knife.

and the pull-through sharpener? quick, cheap, everywhere.
but it doesn't really grind – it tears.
the fixed angle rarely fits your knife, and the edge gets ragged over time.
feels sharp today.
ask dullie about tomorrow.

how we do it. tormek for the edge, a japanese stone for the finish, the belt grinder only when a knife needs thinning – slowly, and kept cool.

mr. pull mr. pull«quick and easy. trust me, bro.»

a pull-through sharpener with millions of followers.

reality hits later. ask dullie.
